It was apparent to all that the Chargers were grooming Philip Rivers to be the starter. It wasn't until after Rivers signed with the Chargers (and remember, Rivers was the second player taken in the draft that year) that Brees really improved.
It was most likely a cost cutting move. And it didn't work out badly for the Chargers - Rivers had a much better than expected year. So did Brees - I hope the Saints make it to the Super Bowl.

His shoulder was way too iffy and he was a huge risk. The Saints had nothing to lose and everything to gain by signing him. It turned out great obviously.

whats the point if you sign him why don't you just keep him? Its shows he is still an elite QB. The main reason why is very few teams wanted him because of that shoulder injury.
