for alcohol, and we didnt expect him to come back for awhile, in fact we arent supposed to know. What can we say, nothing?let him do the talking?what?

Welcome him back. Tell him it is good to see him. Do not open the subject of his alcoholism. He will talk about it when (and if) he chooses to do so. He is going to need a lot of understanding in his new sober life. If possible, try to do whatever you can at work to keep his stress level as low as possible. If he opens the door to talking ask if he goes to AA meetings. If he does not please encourage him to do so. That is really the only way he will stay sober. Rehab alone is not enough. He needs a program and plan for his sobriety and AA offers just that.

Greet him like you normally would and ask how he has been. If he wants to talk about it, he will. Remember the guy is not a leper--he's been very sick.

Say nothing, you're not getting paid to question him. You're getting paid to do your job.
