An African American (also Afro-American) is a member of an ethnic group in the United States whose ancestors, usually in predominant part, were indigenous to Sub-Saharan Africa. Many African Americans possess European, Native American and, to a lesser degree, Asian ancestry as well. In the United States the term is generally used for those who are black , whether or not from Africa or any other country.

Seems as though they should call whites "European American" and asians "Asian American" just like they call blacks "African American" and SOME hispanics "Mexican American". Most people dont know the difference between RACE and ETHNICITY, and the government happens to be culprit.

A person of African descent born or naturalized in America.

Most African Americans have African parents or grandparents, some may have relatives from further back. Some were born in Africa themselves and have ssince applied for and been granted American citizenship.

More than anything tho it's a politically correct and generally meaningless term. If you're born in America you're an American regardless as to what color you are or where your parents came from.

It is used to refer to black Americans, although, Egypt is an African nation and these people are not black. South Africa has a very large white population so they would be African Americans too?

People from Haiti, Jamaica and the Dominion Republic are black and from African ancestors but they are not called African-Americans when they come to the US.

So, I am not sure what an African-American really is.

That's easy. Just look at all the Super Bowl winning head coaches and see what they have in common. Then look at all the players who made it happen and scratch your head wondering why.
