Act like smiling in the begning and it will be a habit by time and by being a habit you will develop it uncouncioously to start to enjoy it. About depression, a person is living for short time and it is not worth it to waste your time in feeling depressed. Try to enjoy life and remember that we are living for short time.
Know that you are still in control. You control the depression, not the other way around. Letting the depression get the best of you will undoubtedly make it more difficult to overcome. Remind yourself that you are ultimately in control, and that this is a phase, and that it's not staying forever.
Talk about it. Keeping these issues and feelings inside may make them grow and get worse over time. Therefore, it could be beneficial for you to discuss this with someone, anyone that you trust and can confide in. Friends and family are there to support you in your time of need, and this is an issue where there is no shame into discussing it.
Go outside. Naturally, the environment and nature makes us feel better. The fresh air, the sounds of the birds, the trees, it has a positive affect on us. Take a walk outside, in a park, in a forest, and you will notice how better you will feel. When you are surrounded by the beauty of nature, you will instantly start feeling better.
Move around. The more you move your body, the better you will feel. Do some exercises, or any activity where you are active and moving, and you will notice that your mood will change. Most people that are depressed are people that lack physical activity.
Talk to your Higher Power. No matter what you believe in, take a moment to talk to your God, your angel, or universal spirit that you know is there and hears you. Pour your heart out, and let all your emotions out. Not only you will feel better, but you will certainly start understanding it all better and start getting the answers you are looking for.
Remember to never ever give up. Life isn't always an easy ride, but there is always light at the end of the tunnel; there is always sunshine after a rainy day. It's not the end of it all, and greater things are in store for you down the line :)

well some people just don't like to smile..possibly because of the way their teeth look..but if you have pretty teeth then you need to smile b/c when you smile it shows that you are happy and when you take pictures with other people it shows how much you are having fun even if you are not... people will also think different of you when you smile knowing that you never do. I have always had ugly teeth and now that i have had braces i try to always keep my teeth healthy and i always wear those crest white strips..they work so well..but why are you depressed? I don't know what is going on in your life and what not but there is no need to be depressed life is too short.. so cheer up and smile!! If God didn't want you to smile then he would have never put a mouth on you..whats the point!?

There's an interesting thing that happens if you just make yourself smile even when it doesn't feel natural. Gradually you start doing it more. One reason it doesn't feel natural is because it's not a regular part of your repertoire. Making yourself can even sometimes affect your feelings of depression and make you feel better.
Be observant and look at what other people do when they are smiling. How are their mouths positioned? How are their cheeks positioned?
Also, stay active and do things you really enjoy doing with people you like as much as possible.
And when you smile more people like to hang out with you more.
Good luck to you!

I was going to ask if you wanted to smile externally more or internally more. But I see you don't understand that even when you are depressed that you are happy being that way and internally you are smiling at the fact that you can have power over others by being depressed.

Smiling is a reflexive response to external stimulus and really can't be learned. You should probably look into some form of counselling to help with your depression. It could be a chemical inbalance or a psychological issue. If you feel down, are loosing sleep and have no appetite it is time to get some objective help.
Good luck to you and try to be kind to yourself.

You have to force yourself to smile, and do it often. Think about positive things. Practice smiling constantly, and it will become more comfortable for you. You aren't comfortable with it yet because you aren't used to smiling. Try smiling at a person who looks like they need a smile. It's contagious. People who smile a lot live longer and are all around happier. Here's a smile for you to get you started. Have a great day!

Start thinking happy thoughts, do things that please you. Watch only funny things on TV or movies, read funny books or things that are light. Stop being so serious. Life is what you make it and what you focus on expands. You are probably handsome when you smile. Try smiling at others and see how many you can get to smile back. It is contagious and you are a winner!
