No, she wasn't, but the role of Dorothy was a role she wanted very much because the Oz books were her favorite. She worked for 20th Century Fox in the 1930's, The Wizard of Oz was made at MGM. Rumor has it that she was considered for the role and MGM was going to trade Clark Gable and Carol Lombard to Fox to have Shirley do Oz, but Lombard died before the deal went thru, but I'm not sure if that's true. Shirley would of never been considered for a munchkin role. She was a huge star in 1939.
BTW, to the person above me...Shirley never played Annie.

i.m the biggest Shirley temple fan in kelowna, i know she never was in the wizard of oz . Shirley temple was a cute red rad head she was in the movie orphan Anne, she has Carly hair. the one that was in the 1939 movie had brown hair and taller and had with straight hair shirley had a cute voice this girl on wizard of as had a boring voice.shirley was called the best actress in the 1930,s in the usa, and the 18th best actress in the world of all time, you only need to write shirley temple name on the net and you can find any thing a but her, but she was more a star as a kid then a woman.

She was the first choice for the lead role. But was unable to do the movie and Judy Garland was chosen.
Shirley Temple was too big a star at the time to play a minor role.

No. The little girl who starred in that was Judy Garland. The movie was made in 1939. Shirley Temple was not in it.

No.
By the time The Wizard of Oz was filmed, she was a pretty big star. Unlikely to be cast as in uncredited munchkin.

cldt is correct! While MGM wanted her to play Dorothy, Shirley Temple was under contract to Fox, and they would not release her to do the film.

I don't think that she was based on the fact that only two of the "munchkins" were normal-height people. Still, though, I'm sure that you would be able to find out on google.
