I'm in zone 7. I have a south faceing front yard.

Yes, rooting-hormone can effectively force the branch to send roots into the soil. I wouldn't use any fertilizer like Miracle-Gro though. Before a cutting has any real roots, any fertilizer could cause the wood to rot. Apply the fertilizer only after it has produced new growth.

I don't know what zone 7 is, but if you dip the bottom of the cutting in some propagating powder and pot it for a few weeks this should help ensure it has a decent chance at getting a root system going, the powder is available at any gardening supply store and well priced.

Plant it in the sun and add sand to the soil, should root quick, put some miracle grow on it.
