I would like to keep my money employing my fellow americans, but the Toyotas are just such a good value and get better mileage. What do you think?

A friend of mine explained the difference between American & Foreign cars:

"The foreign cars run for hundreds of thousands of miles with little repair beyond changing the oil and lubing every few months. The worst thing that ever went wrong on my VW golf that I owned for 11 years was the rear window defroster failing. Big wow. My Ford Courier went through 2 clutches, a differential, u-joints, failed carborator, cooling system (radiator failure), too many brake jobs to count, and then finally and dramatically, the transmission seized up. All a quaint 5.5 years and 110,000 miles into it's miserable life. a full couple of months after the warrenty ended."

Car manufacturers realized that the only way to make money is to sell cars....and cars that last(like the days of old - 55 /57Chev with a bullet proof motor 283,327 or 350 cu.in.) just didn't make sense....so they started to build them cheaper...with parts that wore out sooner. You are unfamiliar of the mid 70's where the car rusted away even though it never saw the rain because of the alloys used in making the steel bodies contained injected impurities that would start the rusting process from under the paint job. No longer were cast iron blocks used that gave 100,000 miles without a problem and then just a minor bore job and you could get oversized pistons for the same block. You could do it twice or 3 times. And parts were always available and swappable from other years because they would fit..
Nowadays, once the warranty is gone the car falls apart.
The foreign cars were doing the quality for the money thing. And yeah, I wasn't put on this planet just to work my **** off just to buy another car(and I don't believe you were either).
The Japanese are building excellent vehicles. Sure they can do it here, but will they? Quality is no longer touted as job 1.

American. They can last just as long with proper maintenance. All Ive had wrong with my Chevy truck is i had to rebuild the transmission, but what do you expect of a work truck that actually works? O and the fuel pump. Big deal. It runs great, looks great, and gets 22 mpg and its a V8 with over 227,000 miles.
Don't tell me American cars don't run as long. I have 3 that will prove you otherwise. lol
My 1994 Silverado, over 300,000 miles on the original motor and transmission, and still running strong, and my 1999 Chevy Prizm with 204,000 miles, getting 38 mpg, running great.

Good luck in your decision.

I think in todays market, the cars are very comparable. The U.S. built cars these days are much better than they were & very close in fuel mileage. Although car repairs are very expensive the parts for a foreign car are usually more expensive. I would stay American, buy American till death do us part !!!!!!!!

your wrong on all accounts excepting wanting to help keep U.S autoworkers working, you must not be paying attention to the news today that Toyota is recalling 500,000 trucks and suv's, they already lead the whole auto industry in recalls, in 2006 they were #1 in recalls followed closely by Honda at #2., the quality at Toyota is slipping quickly and GM is on the verge of world class quality and gas mileage.

Heres a fun fact. Gm and Ford both outsold Toyota in 2006.

First of all, even though some cars say to hold their value longer, they all go down in price. Now in days, the automobile market is so competitive, that its really what you can afford and what you like. Personally, I like foreign cars from Germany.

I would only by Chevy or ford for several years until gas started getting so high. I bought a used Mazda and I have to say that it is the best vehicle as far as reliability and gas mileage I have every bought.

I have found that many american made cars are just as reliable as foreign ones. The "foreign is better" is a myth that should be debunked.

Well, you can buy a Chrysler built in Toluca, Mexico, or a Toyota built in Kentucky. Which one is "American?"
