Yes! Like any other cultural icon, it's always better in person.
Don't miss the Crazy Horse Memorial and Little Big Horn.

It's not amusement park country, just beautiful country. Best late spring.

Short answer: no, it is not worth the drive. Long answer: if you're the kind of person who drives to a place like Mount Rushmore, gets out of the car, spends 5 minutes looking up at the monument and an hour in the gift shop (like my family did when I was young and passing through), then it most certainly is not worth the drive. However, Mount Rushmore can be a fascinating place if yourself and your family beforehand: read about the history of the monument, watch "North by Northwest", etc. Even well-prepared, don't count on the monument itself killing more than a long-halfday (including the gift-shop, if you must). However, there are plenty of other points of interest nearby--none worth the trip individually, but cumulatively round things out nicely: scenic hikes/drives, Wall Drug, etc. Don't go in expecting much, and you'll likely be pleasantly surprised.

It's pretty cool to see, yes. I saw it this summer on my way from Boston to Seattle. As for other things to do in the area, the choices are pretty slim, South Dakota, the dakotas in general aren't very noteworthy for things to see. If you continue on into Wymoning you could go to Yellowstone Park. That might be a nice trip. Mount Rushmore, on to Yellowstone. Other then that the surrounding area of Iowa, Nebraska and Montana are beautiful but not much to get out of your car and act like a tourist for

Mt. Rushmore is a travisty. To carve this monument in the Lakota's most sacred land is an embarassment. The land is scared and you can feel the pain when you are there.
Gieco man is right go see the Crazy Horse memorial and little big horn skip Mt. Rushmore.
