couple things:

1. Check the ide cable on the back of the cd rom is connected fully. Maybe disconnect it, blow on the cable and port to blow any debris from it and reconnect it.

2. Right click on "My Computer" and select "Properties". Go to the "Device Manager" tab and click on "Manage Devices" to show a list of periphrials connected to the computer. Make sure that your CDROM is listed under the "DVD/CD-ROM Drives" category with no yellow caution icon. If you have a yellow icon over the hard drive then you need to reinstall drivers for the CDROM possibly.

3. If you have a dead CDROM drive after looking into the above steps, just order a new DVD writer from new egg for $25 and install it with the manual it comes with. It's pretty straight forward and easy if you have any computer skills.

Could be a CD problem the type being used. (read/write/cd/dvd etc)
I assume these are discs that you read before?
It may just be a wire that came undone inside the pc

Is the drive old (possible the read head no longer works)

Try installing new drivers from the manufacturers site

2 problems, either your cd player cant read the disk, if its a recordable disk, some cd players wont read them also you may need to clean your lens.
