i started catching for softball about 1 year ago and i luv it. i'm pretty good too (according to everybody else, including the other teams coaches and the umpire, but i don't think i'm all that great). anyway i play softball because it's fun, winning either comes or it doesn't. anyhoo (oh, i'm a 15 year old girl by the way), i started to have pain in my heels. at first i just shrugged it off, but when it got to be too much, i told somebody. the doctor said my achilles tendon is being strained, he said i could either quit catching or catch and just know it's gonna hurt. softball sign-ups are tomorrow and i don't know if i should put that i'm a catcher or second baseman (my other position).doc said there is a slight possibility that i could tear my tendon, but it's not very likely. i want to catch, but i don't want to hurt myself. what should i do, any advice?

While signing up, see if you can list both positions, with second base being the primary position you play. This way you can continue to play softball and still catch if you want to. Also, talk to your doctor about stretching exercises that will help loosen the tendon and make it more flexible. I had a problem with mine a few years ago from constantly walkin in high heels (i'm 26 by the way) and my doctor told me to do ankle stretches, where I would place the front of my foot against a wall and my heel on the floor and lean into the wall. This stretched my achilles tendon as well as my calf muscle, making both more flexible. I gave up the heels, but continue to do the stretches today and i've not had any other problems. Check with the doctor first before you start this though. hope it works out for you. good luck

Ever heard of stretching? I am surprised that your doctor did not recommend that. Our tendons contract and extend depending on what we do in our lives. You need to stretch them in order to lengthen them and have them more flexible. Try Yoga or something like that, it will allow them to be much more supple.

my moms a physical therapist, you might want to see one..i used to have a bad knee that made me quit soccer because the Doctor said that i might have to have surgery if i didn't. i love soccer and so i went to my mom's clinic, apparently it was no big deal and i just walked on the outsides of my foot, you can do muscle exercizes like i did on my knee except with your ankle. if you want to know them post add a comment if you do because they take a long time to write...i can play soccer thanks to those exercises sign up for softball!!!!
