They commute, living in outlying communities. Or at least the ones I know do.
Some years ago, there was talk of providing subsidized housing for San Francisco teachers. It was roundly defeated.

Most will commute. My sister in law is a teacher at Dominican College just outside of San Francisco and she commutes about two hours on a bad traffic day and 90 minutes on a good traffic day.

More than likely they commute as everyone ahead of me has mentioned. At one time California was trying to create a program that assisted teachers in getting low intrest loans for homes located near the schools they teach, but with the majority of high schools located in cities such as SF, Berkeley and Oakland, what teacher would want to live that close to his/her place of employment? Not saying that all of the schools are in rough neighborhoods, but in my opinion as a future teacher there is no way I want all of my students to know my home address. That's just not appealing to me.

AHHhhh...I am one and I am still trying to figure out how I manage. I heard that a single mom who is a teacher qualifies for state assistance. How sad is that?
I have relatives in Florida...the teachers there make the same with full benifits. We don't even get full benifits!!!!

They marry corporate attorneys, or stock-brokers.
