mosquitos 'home in' on the CO2 you exhale.
whether or not they 'bite' you seems to depend on the chemicals your body exudes/smells like (as purfumes/etc can increase or decrease your likelyhood of being bitten)

I always try to answer your questions. Most scientists believe that the Carbon dioxide we breathe out is the attractant. However there has to be more to it than that and there is. Mosquitoes are attracted to Limburger cheese so I know that there is something else going on because Limburger doesn't breathe in oxygen and breathe out CO2. That would really stink because Limburger smells bad enough already. If you are at a picnic, and you were the only one that ate a banana, you would attract more mosquitoes than the other folks at the picnic. However you would also be more likely to attract monkeys and chimpanzees so that in itself leaves some questions unanswered. The mosquitoes seem to prefer women's perfume to men's Cologne, children to adults, people that react to the bites more dramatically attract more mosquitoes than those that don't. And last, they prefer non-smokers to smokers.... you're still beautiful.

The female mosquito, looking for nourishment for its eggs, would prefer nectar from flowers. It settles for mammalian blood because often that is all it can get. Hence, sugars attract the little pest. Both garlic and beets repel it.

Fmeale's are attracted by warm bodies, blood in other words. Males, which do not bite, are attracted by females. Females are also blind. So those bug zappers: they kill them but only the harmless males.
