the "hold" button is there so you can put it in your pocket or bag. if you turn it on, it renders the other buttons useless until you turn it back off.

I have a mp3 from another brand, but on my mp3 it makes that the other buttons don't work (helpful if you don't want, for instance, the stop button to be accidentally pressed).

the hold button on mp3/cd walkmans and similar devices when enabled stops buttons working when you machine is in bags or pockets, and as a result draining batteries.

You use the hold button if you don't want the other buttons to work. It basically freezes all the other buttons. It helps to keep from pressing buttons that you don't want to press.

you press the hold button so that when you put it in your pocket even if a button is pressed it wont do anything, so basically when the h old b utton is on, nothing else is going to work

When your mp3 is off, turn on the hold and it makes sure that it dosen't accidentaly turn on and waste the battery.

so that if you turn it off, switch on the hold button, it won't start playing if its in your bag or something. its to save battery life really. check your instruction manual for more info.

it is for when you are running or something. it plays the songs but the buttons dont work in case they are accidently pressed while running

Well why don't you try it!!! I think it stops music, I forgot, i used to have same thing on mine.. I'm sure it's not going to do any harm!!!
