What exactly happens when you give up smoking?
Most smokers experience some withdrawal symptoms when giving up smoking. These vary from one person to another and can include any of the following: irritability, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, coughing, restlessness, disturbed sleep and mouth ulcers.
Withdrawal symptoms when giving up smoking might not be as severe as you fear, and for some pass within a few days. For others though, it might take a bit longer. Think of the side effects of quitting smoking as your body starting to recover from the damage caused by smoking. For example, a wet chesty cough means you're getting rid of the rubbish in your lungs.
It’s important not to be afraid of what may happen to you when you give up smoking. Focus on the positive changes while the side effects of quitting smoking subside.
The good news is that your body starts feeling the benefits as soon as you’ve smoked your last cigarette.
Within 20 minutes your blood pressure and pulse returns to normal
Within 20 hours carbon monoxide clears from your body. Oxygen levels rise and you have more energy
Within 3 days your breathing becomes easier as your bronchial tubes begin to relax
Within a few weeks your fingers lose their yellow stains and your skin looks better
Within 3 months your circulation is improved
Within 3-9 months your lungs are clear of most of the mucus and tar that has accumulated over the years. You feel fitter and free of coughs and wheezing
Within a year your risk of a heart attack has fallen to about half that of a smoker.
Think positive, do not class yourself as an ex-smoker trying to give up; class yourself as a non-smoker.
Put the money you would have spent on fags in a jar and use this to treat yourself every now and then.
There are organisations like Smokeline in Scotland and the NHS Smoking cessation helpline in England and Wales. Northern Ireland also has a Helpline.
As I don't know where you live the numbers are.
Smokeline.....0800 84 84 84
NHS...0800 169 0 169
NISH...0800 85 85 85
Well done for kicking the habit. Stick it out and you will feel the benefits both financially and cosmetically.

Good for you!! It's the hardest thing you'll ever do. The only thing you can look forward to now is easy breathing, feeling better, fresh breath, nice teeth. There are no negatives anymore. It's all good!!

if you smoked 20 a day you would have been spending around 30-32 pounds per week, just think, every fortnight you will have about 65 extra pounds to spend on anything you like, every month that is £130, that is is every month you dont smoke, not just one month.
Keep it up, just think how much nicer you will smell, i have just recently given up and i hope like you that i will keep it up just think in6 mths we will have an extra £780 pounds in our pockets

it takes 2years to lose the craving for a cigarettes completely, sounds hard i know.
but the good thing is that after 2 years you will feel sick at the thought of sticking a ciggy in your mouth.
the danger after 2 years is that you have a one out of curiosity
