I have onboard sound with 5.1 surround capabilities,but Windows vista only allows 2.1.

Even though it's onboard sound you still might need Vista specific drivers for it because Vista is pretty new (the same thing happened for a lot of hardware when XP was first release. You best bet is to go to the website of the manufacturers of your motherboard and look for drivers for your motherboard, if audio drivers are available they'll be listed there.

Vista still has all kinds of compatibility problems. Bestg bet is to contact the cards manufactur for support. Or you can try microfosft knowledge base.

Before loading Vista, download "Windows Vista upgradeadvisor" from www.microsoft.com, install on your computer and run it. It will tell you each and every thing about the compatibility of your hardwares. Also it will tell what to upgrade. After checking that report, if every thing is fine then only install Vista on your computer.

It is probably a driver problem, try looking for updated drivers.
