Don't live in Miami , but in cities like :
Weston, West Miramar, Pembroke Pines, Coral Springs, Coral Gables, Ft. Laturdale, Boca Raton, and Plantation.

I think there was an article in Money magazine or Forbes that listed the 100 best cities to live in the US. and #44 was Pembroke Pines , somewhere in the 50's is Coral Gables, 60's Springs, #87 West Miramar.
They are about 30-45 minute drive to Miami.

There are no safe neighborhoods in Miami, plane and simple. Most of the cities that others are mentioning are in Broward. Depending on where you need to be in Miami and what time of day you need to be there, commute time could be from 30 min. to 1 1/2 hrs or even more. Although, it is generally accepted here that Broward co. is safer than Dade co (which is true), in my opinion it's all unsafe. I moved here less than a year ago and what I notice from people who defend Miami when this issue is brought up is that they have all lived here for a long time. They start to forget, or just don't know how the rest of America works. Miami is a completely different world. There are many luxuries that I have been accustomed to that you just can't get in south Florida. A major luxury is the safe feeling I used to take for granted. I know that there is crime everywhere, and I have not experienced living in cities like LA or NYC with large crime problems so I can't compare it to cities like that. In comparison to Denver and Seattle, this place is a joke, and its completely unsafe. I understand that a lot of people have a different opinion than I, but if you expect a certain level of security like I do, you will more than likely be sadly disappointed with all of south Florida

You can tell that the people who hate Miami... Never lived here. I grew up in one of the bad "hoods" called Carol City.... but I never got rob, not even a broken car window.

I am not saying Miami is crimeless.... but it has its bad parts just like any major city!

Try.... Miaim Springs ( near airport... plane noise but safe). South Miami... or Kendall. Miami Shores is ok too. Coral Gables is nice but very expensive.

My advice try Miramar, FL (west side only) zip 33027.
Pembroke Pines.

Both are just outside the Miami Dade county Line and very safe and quite. I live in Miramar and can still make it to South Beach in 20min.

I have live in Miami 24 years and my car was broken into once with little taken. My bike was also taken years ago from a my apartment in Coral Gables. I moved here from a small farming town in Kansas where I grew up and lived for 22 years. I had 5 bikes taken as a youth, there were 3 murders in our town that I know of when growing up and I was beaten and robbed one night outside of a local club. Therefore I disagree with anyone that states Miami in general is an unsafe city. Don't get involved in drugs and other ileagal activity, don't live or "hook up" until you get to know someone and use your brain in any place you live.
The growing downtown area north (upper East Side and Miami Shores)is a great place to live and I would not live anywhere else but this area. I course I don't walk the streets late at night and I live in a building with full security.
I lived in Coral Gables and loved it even though my bike was taken years ago at my apartment. I was stupid to leave it chained to a light post outside of my complex.
The beach area is nice but too busy unless you like that atmosphere and a bit transiant which leads to crime as far as I am concerned.Kendall is great but I witnessed a lot of car break-in and friends had homes robbed there which took me to the city and condo like.
The Roads area right south of downtown is nice for home buying and Coconut Grove for the most part is nice except for a small section in the west part of the Grove (grand ave/douglas area).

Yeah... just don't live down in Miami. It's crime city.
Anywhere north, Hollywood, Ft. Lauderdale, Dania, etc. is a lot safer, and Miami is only 30-45minutes drive, which makes it an easy day trip or commute.
Beware, housing and rent is extremely expensive in south florida in general.

If you want to be realistic, there are no safe places in the city. Even in the most affluent parts of town, violent crimes such as army robberies, beatings, and murders can occur.
