I recommend TuneUp Utilities... you can get a free trial download of it. Use it to optimize your settings for performance, and especially run the "system adviser" that is included. Follow as much of that advice as possible.
Also, you want to make sure you don't have too many things opening when the computer starts up (all those programs in the bottom right corner by the clock). And make sure you run disk defragment fairly often (at least once a month).

Get better RAM. You can check what you have in C Drive properties. I for example have only 256MB RAM but if I got 1gig+ it would be alot faster. Also if you mean net speed, you need to get a better speed from your net provider. Also use antivirus and antimalware programs that don't run in the background. Use them to scan once a week and to scan your emails as they come in instead.

Let me guess. You got this new laptop and either started loading up stuff you got from your friends or downloaded from the net ( or maybe you did both) and now things don't work as well as when you first got it?
congratulations you just learned just how easy it is to screw up a computer!
If you have a recovery disk, I'd format the hard drive and start all over. Don't load crap onto it in the first place and you won't have this trouble again.

When you are using windows XP, try to reduce the startup software when system boots up.
Try to use classic windows setting int the setting. you can do this by right clicking onto the task bar. then properties, start menu tab.
and so much more things to customize

Clean out the spyware with Spybot search & destroy, shutoff stuff you don't use in your taskbar, run "disk cleanup", run "defragment disk", make sure you have at least 500MB free of disk space...
all these things will help!

defragment your computer regularly by cleaning out any cookies or temporary files, also check memory of computer to see if you can add more memory which would also help speed it up. use the taskmanager to find out how your computer is performing. right click the task bar to select taskmanager then click performance tab and observe the charting of the memory and performance of the computer, if the memory maxes out, means it's time to add more memory.
