Actually the law you are specifically talking about already exists in Michigan.. adultry there is a felony (its rarely enforced though)
as for can they "DO THAT" Oh sure they can... you can pass just about any law you want passed if you get the legislative support for it... No smoking laws, seatbelt laws, helmet laws, no spitting on the sidewalk laws, no jaywalking laws etc etc. Why not an anti-adultry law.. actually anti adultry laws used to be the norm in the USA not all that long ago.. (still is in several states.. but again rarely enforced)
Life in prison for cheating? Hmm maybe a good idea after all

You seem like a very young person. You are carrying so much that is beyond you. I am providing a link to some articles that are designed to help young people cope with issues in their life. Some of the subjects are: What If I’m Lonely? What If My Parents Are Divorcing? What if I’m Being Bullied? Am I Obsessed With My Appearance? I wish you happiness and success

i haven't heard this..but as a married woman it does sound nice, but i think it's hypocritical because, adultery as a crime is based on one of the 10 commandments. Thow shall not covet thy neighbors wife. i am reminded of something called separation of church and state. :)
but back to your question.... i think there are more important people that can fill our prisons than adulterers. personally i don't want my tax $ spend on some d!ck who can't keep his thing in his pants. ya know. America doesn't have that sort of funding.

No that can't do that, and even if they tried the statute would be struck down on all sorts of consitutional grounds - cruel and unusual punishment, due process, etc.
PS Just read 2007's link. That court's decision would be struck down by the state's Supreme Court and thereafter to the US Supreme Court.

Thats crazy. 50% of people get divorced already. Just imagine how many of those were because of adultery. Are society would become one big prison. "DON'T DROP THE SOAP"

I hadn't heard that. That would probably cut down the amount of people getting married.

They won't do that. All of the dems, and alot of the Reps would end up in prison. What would we do for politicians?
