Serious replies only -- preferably from Taiwanese people or someone otherwise familiar with Taiwanese politics. My question is not meant to be mocking; I am genuinely interested in the underlying dynamics of this phenomenon.

First of all, they are relatively short tempered (for Asian people).
Secondly, the big political topic is the independence from China. A few years ago it was a no-brainer. Everyone knew they were better off without communist China. However, with all the political reform going on over there at the moment, some political parties are trying to get the country to become part of China again. (plse note that China still sees Taiwan as a rebellious province). If you want to have more in-dept info about this, I would like to advise a history book on Taiwan.

My guess would be 2 things. 1st politics are ugly in every country & Taiwan is no different & 2nd they can get away with the brawls. It is accepted by their legislative body. We in the US have rules & security to enforce those rules. Anytime people are given no rules there is someone who will step over the bounds of decency. In their case manyhave joined the few who started stepping over that bounds of decency.

Political debates always become heated. Some countries seem to allow this to go go on and then there you have it. BASH! right in the face. And then it's on.
