If someone really wants to kill themselves they will find a way of doing it and its no-ones fault - its their right as a human being to make that terrible step. You cannot take responsibility for someone else so stop trying. A good friend will give her the number of the Samaritans and coax her to her GP - you can't force it but gentle suggestions are okay. Meanwhile don't spend all your time with her - take some time out and try to relax and get away from it all. You will then have the energy required to give your friend the love she needs. I would also suggest that you don't give her unlimited time to talk about her depression - you could unwittingly be making it worse by constantly dwelling on it. Destracting her with other outside issues like whats happening in the world or on a soap or who is dating who and that kind of thing will remind her that life goes on and that the world is ready and waiting when she wants to join it again. Can I also suggest that you phone the Samaritans - they are a lovely bunch of people who would gladly listen and will help you too. People forget how sad it is for you - but you need love and attention as well.

the samaritans are good listeners.
friends being a constant reassuring presence.
a walk and a chat.
acceptance of a situation which seems hopeless.
sitting somewhere quiet, and talking with a friend who you feel safe with.
the installation of hope.
writing down what you are angry about.
talking aboiut anger.
I could carry on forever but I hope this has been of some help, and you seem to be the friend who can help. well done

I agree with destineysangel. She needs medical help. This is not your role unless you are medically qualified.
You should do what you are doing, be her friend, a social and emotional support. "Be there" for her. We don't know the problem, so can't advise you what to say. Let her talk to you (or suggest Samaritans if too awkward) and say what seems right. Understand it is not what you say that is important, this is a problem you can't fix for her with an insightful answer or remark, just listen and be a friend.

It's always good to speak to someone about this sort of thing......someone with training/experience, hope the above numbers can help you. You mustn't deal with this on your own, everyone should be involved, her parents, your parents etc...talk to someone- your Dr too, health visitor, but as it's friday night, start with the Samaritans .
Well done for trying to help, but you need back -up on this, it shouldn't be your responsibility.....and you need to have someone taking care of you, for listenening to all the difficult stuff..

I don't know what advice to tell you to give her, but I can suggest that you spend as much time as possible with her, and just listen to whatever she has to say. Let her know that you are there for her no matter what time of the day or night.
