I have seen a few local bands struggling, lately, and this has been on my mind. On the one hand, the voice CARRIES the message, the lead brings the lyrics, and if his/her voice is crap, then no one will stay to hear the message, no matter how great the lyrics are. On the other hand, if the music is TIGHT and catchy, and folks dig it, they'll listen past a cruddy, or mediocre performer.

So I will say that the music is the most importand thing; and within the music, the bass and drum have to have a precise and flowing marriage... the rest will follow, (hopefully with vocal coaching!).

Well, I've played in quite a few bands, and it's always been important to have a great driving beat, without drums the whole thing tends to fall apart, I should say rythm section though, as the bass does a terrific job of that too, usually. Drums are the backbone, Bass is the heart, and the Lyrics/Guitar is the limbs in which the song can communicate with objects/people. For flare and excitement, solo's and killer vocals, but for a STRUCTURE, drums and bass are critical :), if you care to chat more, gimme a shout on IM.

music, then the vocals, and then the lyrics. If you think about it, you actually start to like a song in this order... first you hear the music, then you like the vocals, then you start to listen to the lyrics.

I think the music, because when it sounds good, you don't even care about the lyrics.
