Older cards are almost always worth more, especially if they're in decent condition.
As the years go by, baseball cards get thrown away, or damaged, or destroyed, and the further back you go in time, the fewer baseball cards exist from that era.
Plus, back then, Topps was basically the only company that made baseball cards. Today, everyone and his brother owns a baseball card company. There are probably at least 20 different Albert Pujols "rookie" cards, made by 20 different companies.
If you have the space, you should probably keep all of them. Some cards will appreciate in value faster than others, but potentially, any card is a collectible (eventually).
Among the best cards to have are "rookie" cards of players who turned out to be Hall of Famers. Everyone would know NOW to save a Roger Clemens card, but to have a Roger Clemens ROOKIE card is something else altogether.

It really depends, but on normal occasions it is the 1977 because people that used to collect, dont have them any more making them rarer, making them worth more. The exception is if you have say only Albert Pujols, Ryan Howard, Carlos Zambrano, A-Rod, Derek Jeter...(top players from now) rookie cards and all of your 1977 cards are scrubs that no one has heard of then the moderns will be worth more but in most cases the older, the better

You can check out the values of your cards at www.beckett.com ,if you have some cards of stars they might have decent value. The commons aren't worth too much, but more than newer cards.
The key factor will be the condition of your cards. If they aren't mint or close to it the value drops dramatically.
If your question is also asking which cards are "better", newer issues or older...I have to vote for older issues. Altho the newer cards look slick w great photography & slick production.....something is missing ....I guess the older hards so "perfect". Not to mention the price used to make collecting cards a fun thing for kids of all ages without spending $5 for a pack w maybe 10 cards at best.
