American Football is a modified version of rugby, which replaced British Football as the sport of choice for inter-collegiate athletics.

Rugby, as modified by the Massasoit convention in 1876, took the name Football as the name of the sport.

Why "football"? Probably because 130 years ago running and kicking were pretty much all that were involved. Passing by air has only been allowed since 1906, and field goals (kicked) were originally worth 5 points.

the ball is a foot long, gets kicked off and punted and is kicked during field goals, all involving the presence of feet, and football has certain aspects that evolved from soccer, which was originally called football, or "el futbol"

Its becuase Americans like to copy our English words and either change the meaning, or the spelling - or both! Hence there is a distinct lack of 'foot kicking the ball' in what they like to call football. I like to call it 'no balls'....kinda catchy.
