You here them all the time. With 1 in 20 chance of being wrong but nobody reports which one's are examples of the 1 in 20!!! We have hundreds of polls reported every year, some of which are "surprising".

In addition to the 1 and 20 which assumes poll is done well to avoid bias, alot of times carefulness of the phrasing of the questions are not discussed. People can sometimes put interpretations of the polls that are false.

You're right: only the pollster has the data, so only the pollster can make sure it's reported accurately. However, the major polling firms all make their non-private data available to anyone willing to pay for it.

Polling companies usually have enough experience to phrase questions in unambiguous terms. False interpretations usually stem from slipshod reporting.
