here is the list of hands from worst to best
high card (no pairs - such as A-K-9-7-2)
one pair (such as 8-8-3-4-5 - pair of 8s)
two pair (such as 9-9-3-3-7 - two pairs 9s and 3s)
three of a kind (such as 6-6-6-A-5 - three sixes)
straight (5 cards in a row such as 3-4-5-6-7)
flush (5 cards of the same suit
full house (three of a kind and two of a kind such as AAAKK)
straight flush (5 cards in a row of the same suit such as 6-7-8-9-10 all diamonds)
royal flush (A-K-Q-J-10 all of the same suit)
if you are playing a home game with wildcards, some people say 5 of a kind is the best hand
The important thing to remember is only your best 5 cards count. So if you are playing 7 card stud or texas holdem and your hand is (5-5-8-8-J-J-A) your hand is two pairs, 8s and Jacks, with an Ace Kicker. The fives are meaningless because there is no such hand is 3 pair

Here is a site that details the 10 best hands and the 10 worst hands...and its not a poker site where you have to sign up or feel tempted to play.
Most beginners play hands that are not as good as they think, this link will help understand some of that.
http://poker.about.com/od/strategyadvice/qt/bestworsthands.htm
Here is a link for the basic hands in order of what wins...
http://www.onlinepokerfaq.com/guide/hand-rankings.html
I would also recoomend buying a poker calculator and using it while you play -- it will instantly tell you how your hand ranks against all the potetial hands at the table. over time, you will get better as you watch.
Good luck!
