The mayans have been capable of accurately predicting each eclipse and each astrological event but the fact that they say that the world will end on 2012 is only because of the limit of their system of predictions. It only means that with their system of predicting using the stars cannot predict pass the year 2012, there fore they believe that the world will end on 2012 to excuse their limited system for not being able to predict anything pass the year 2012. If the world does end, it won't be in a year that really has no meaning. It would have made more sense if the world ended on the year 2000 rather than 12 years later.

If the world is going to end, then it's futile to protect yourself.
Is there a chance the world could end in 2012? Sure. There's also a chance that my car will spontaneously be transported across the universe. Now, if the world ends in 2012, does that mean the Mayans were correct? Not necessarily. Remember, the Mayans didn't say that the world would end. 2012 is when their calendar ends. There's a subtle, but important, difference there.
However, I'd be willing to bet money that, come Dec. 26th, 2012, we'll still be here, trundling along as we always have. I'd also be willing to bet that, after that date, there will be yet another date that people will try to ascribe to the end of all things.

As stated before the Mayans are now all but extinct long before 2012. I don't think the world will end in that year but it should be a massive change possibly towards the means to an end. According to something I had heard a long time ago and any sources of this information given to me are lost in my memories so long ago. Society has a spiral affect and every 2000 years one society and culture dies out as a new one begins. As far as preparing or protecting ones self for the end there is no protection. If the true end happens than may it be quick and quiet like a theif in the night. Also i will be upset it I have paid off all my loans the day before.

If the world's gonna end, you are gonna end with it. There isn't a thing you can do to protect yourself.
The thing with the Mayans was that 2012 was the end of that particular calendar. Had the Mayans stuck around, they would have developed the next cycle on the calendar.
So, don't sign any long term notes hoping to get out of them because the world ends in 2012.

People also predicted that the world would end in 2000 (and many other times before and since). Obviously they were wrong!
Actually the Mayans never said the world would end in 2012, it's more like the end of one calendar and the beginning of another, but I forget the details - you can look it up.
If the world did end, there would be no way to protect yourself!

Negative!
The Mayan calendar finishes, runs out, expires on 23rd December 2012. It is only "new-age" cultists and con artists desperate for some attention (and money) who reckon that means the end of the world. Why? The calendar itself actually says nothing at all about final destruction, it simply finishes. That's all! All calendars run out of date eventually.
And no other civilisation has predicted that to be the end of the world either.
If the Mayans were able to foresee the future one might logically presume they would have avoided the sudden collapse of their own empire.
Don't get sucked in by all the guff.

The mayans predicted several dates for the end of the world, but be careful because their calendar was different from ours.
I don't think anyone knows when the world ends, but if it ends in any of our lifetimes, there is nothing we can do to protect ourselves. How would you stay alive if the world ended?

In science the world won't end until the sun ends. The sun is giving out Hydrogen to nuclearize it into Helium for light. The Hydrogen atoms are almost gone. If the hydrogen atoms will be gone the sun will explode. Remember the sun is a star, and stars explode. When this happens the sun will be dead and not just them also the whole Solar System because a star's explosion reaches in a trillion, trillion, trillion, trillion, trillion, trillion, trillion, trillion light years away.
