Because most of us can't express for ourselves the things we find in art. Artists help us find many worlds in ourselves.

because these are the people who can't or don't know how to do anything else productive with their lives. if they are lucky, they can sell their goods to egotistical people and therefore contribute to the marketplace.
on the flipside, they are the historians of the world, without artists we would not know much about the past and civilizations - how they lived etc.
And, humans like pretty shiny things and will buy anything that someone else has just to have it too.
