Boy leaves home with his old neighbor (who dies right after). Fights a lot and then disappears. Later is taught how to fight by a lizard living in the swamp. Then he goes and rescues his friends, then fights some more...this time with a guy who turns out to be his dad. Anyone seen it?

sounds like you're weaving together STAR WARS and EMPIRE STRIKES BACK together into one flick.
or maybe you've seen some Bmovie i've never heard of- but i stand by my answer.
