"We" can't stop war. It takes everyone to do that and we are a long way from it. Pollution can be stopped by a determined people empowering a strong government with a mandate to stop it. We have too many individuals who will insist that they have a "right" to continue doing as they please. We must either make it a national project of cooperation or submit to a dictatorship. I opt for the cooperation.

Not everyone is saying that. Most people are asking "Is it too late?"
Many of us are sick of war. Notice Bush's popularity is tanking? Its because of this whole "staying the course" business.
Scientists can also tell where the Clean Air Act was passed, because of the change in ice core samples from glaciers. People are driving hybrid cars, recycling, supporting programs at zoos, reusing... The US is getting better.
Now, we have to get businesses and foreign countries like China and India on board. It isn't so much about every little bit helping any more. Low-flow shower heads and energy-efficient appliances are great, but if one major corporate building isn't "green" then it negates the work of several homeowners. We can do our best to stop polluters on our soil, but it means nothing if China is dumping raw sewage into it's rivers. It still ends up in our oceans. We can pick up all day long, but it means nothing if we're standing in a place the rest of the world uses as a dump.
So, education needs to spead abroad in a non-offensive way. We need to offer incentives to foreign, non-polluting, child-labor free companies offering their workers a good wage. Let's get Bono and Angelina on that right away, before Madonna starts adopting all the poor kids in that country.

Only God can change the world. We are all here for a reason, and we won't know what this is until we die. I'm not saying that I don't feel sorry for the victims.
