Restaurants and retail tend to have the higher risk and failure rates, while not offsetting that risk with higher rewards. It really takes a lot of business to make money at either one of those. However, that doesn't mean NOT to do it. If you believe in your idea, take the shot. You'll kick yourself later if someone else does it and succeeds.

As far as what NOT to enter, stay away from any venture that is a partnership. And if you really really need the help that a partner has to offer, get the business started on your own first, in the best capacity you can, and then offer a non-majority interest that keeps you as the principal decision maker and allows you the right to dissolve the partnership if the other party doesn't keep up their end of the deal. 50/50 is a recipe for unneccessary stress.

Anything in the food industry is a risk unless it's chocolate or some time type of food that is needed. Retail is your best bet because if people don't buy what you are selling you can always change it.
