Doctors are beginning to understand what makes the minds of little kids tick. Unfortunately the doctors who study people are paid by pharcmaceutical companies, capiche?
Seriously, the only thing wrong with these kids is a lack of discipline, but parents fall for the label their kid has. They actually put their kids on meds so they will conform to "the norm." Somebody needs to tell the schools to cut it out already and quit insisting we dope the kids. Parents need to wake up and realize what they are doing to their kids. Kids have come into my classroom so drugged up they can't stay awake. They can't sleep at night because of the meds. They have digestion/ concentration/ pronunciation/ comprehension problems because of drugs they have to take just to keeep a few gripy teachers happy. Does no one think for him/herself any more? Real kids act up, they cry, they yell, and they hit. Real kids play and they don't want to pay attention. They talk and walk around the class spilling stuff. They give you headaches and then they grow up. (Well, OK they are wonderful too). Get over it. Can the drugs before its too late. READ HARRISON BERGERON by Kurt V.

Some students have these disabilities. But the majority who are so laveled do not. However, its a matter of social control. Students who are active--often the most intelligent who become bored with the low level of educational challenge in our public schools and become restive--are routinely laveled "ADD" or some other "condition."

I notice that some of the other answerers are people who have been duped into the "we're more aware now" excuse. That's true from one standpoint--we do know more abot these conditions and that's a good thing. But that does not change the fact that the majority of these children do not have a disability and are being drugged for no good reason--and despite my harsh words, I do know tha tmany teachers who are complicit don not realize the nature of the situation and are acting innocently. I hope they wake up and smell th ecoffee.
Parents, concerned for their children, make the mistake of trusting this "determination." What they don't know is that usually it represents nothing more than the opinion of a teacher or counselor who is not qualified--and is certified by a doctor who (for a fee) performs a cursory interview--sometimes only a few minutes--and then signs off on the 'diagnosis." This has been aggresively promoted by pharmaceutical companies who are making literally billions a year off theis scam.

What is worse is that the drugs these children are being pumped full of are similar to cocaine--and as addictive.

Don't get me wrong--a minority of these children ARE disabled--and do need proper training in coping techniques and often medication. Mostly, they don't get the training. And there is a real danger that when ths whole mess of chickens comes home to roost, there may be a reaction against ALL those labeled ADD, bipolar, or whatever--compounding the tragedy.

I said its a matter of social control. what iI mean is simple. Our teachers, whom we're told are so noblel, have no problem with dealing with overactive or overly bright children who present a challenge by fillling them full of drugs to keep them quiet.

Autism is increasing because of advancing paternal age for the last 30 or so years, I believe. There must be genes in sperm that mutate quite easily. If there is already autism in the family there is quite a high risk of having autistic children from the mother or the father. With older fathers there is increasing risk of autism and early childhood schizophrenia. When the father is older there is an equal risk boys and girls who are autistic. In familial autism there is a ratio of 6 boys to one girl indicated that there is an involvement in the X chromosome. ADHD also seems to be inherited and also Bipolar disorder. I think earlier fathering or cryo preserving semen would help stem the epidemic of autism and schizophrenia.

My mom is a special education teacher and she said alot of it has to do with the fact that there was little attention made towards ADD, and autism before. With more notoriety, it is getting more attention. She does think though that there is a very quick decision in determining whether people have it and is suprised that people get put on meds so easily.

Not sure about being bipolar however...

We've been on the planet for a million years, and we're only now beginning to understand what is the most complex electrical machine ever made - the human brain. Before, people were just crazy, stupid, weird. Everyone knew who "the village idiot" was, but no one had any idea what was wrong with him. Only in the last generation or so have we begun to formulate answers. And believe me, we still have a long, long way to go. Hope this helps.

In the past, "the good 'ol days', many people just dropped out of school and became burdens on society because the lack of education led to crime or a welfare mind set. Labels can be negative, but are necessary in identifying students who need help. With a good education an autistic child can grow up go to college and become a good computer hacker, or electronic engineer. Children with ADHD can settle down and pay attention in their classes and to people in their interpersonal relationships. People with Bipolar disorder need not live with mood swings and be plagued with melancholia. Oh, and in the 'good 'ol days' people with mental retardation were chained up in garages, shut up in attics, and shipped off to overcrowded state hospitals where they lived lives of neglect, and when they died were buried unceremoniously in unmarked graves...Yes, let have the good 'ol days back...

better awareness and recognition. these problems have always been around its just that we here a lot more about them than in the past.

in most cases that is a good thing my son is getting the help and support i never had at school and hopefully he will not grow up feeling different but never understanding why like i did, but and there is always a but some people will try to use a learning disability as an excuse for their child's simple bad behaviour and their inability to parent them effectively.

for ADHD most kids are getting misdiagnosed. they have short attention spans because of all the distraction around them-computer, television, video games, etc.
and...my brother has autism, and we think the reason for that is genetic conditions+ vaccinations (particularly mercury) he got when he was just a baby(and that most babies get). what i mean is, he might already have had a genetic susceptability, and vaccinatiosn and injectiosn and whatever made that certain trait show up. of course this is just a theory...
