He did? I don't recall ever hearing that. The existence of ether was disproved shortly before Einstein started publishing his major works.

Einstein was the one who derived that there was no aether with relativity.

The Michelson-Morley Ether-drift experiments (from Albert Michelson and Ed Morley) also showed there was no ether.

yeah he didnt believe that...and it was Aristotle that first coined the term aether in conjuction with classical elements...
