Had a friend that was going through tough times financially and was trying to sell a fish tank - something that you wanted, but found better deals on that would save you $10 - $20 would you go for the better deal or help your friend out?

Both are used and come with the same thing, only difference is one comes with a stand, the other does not...BUT....the "better deal" would have to run for a few days because of the filter.

Truth, if you have to ask I am glad you are their friend and not mine.
I am the type who would give the friend a loan they did not ask for and tell them to put me at the very bottom of the payback list, to pay me back once they were on their feet and did not really need what I loaned them, even if they need it only for a little luxury. Leave him the fish tank to sell to someone else. Loan him all you can including the last dime you can afford without getting the tank from him or elsewhere.
If you can't do that, quit calling him a friend: he (or you) is only an acquaintance.
I live by a code. That code is not always easy. My friendships are few but true.
Regards

For only 10-20 extra I'd help the friend out for sure, without a doubt.

For sure help the friend out. What is 10-20 dollars. That is your friend and you should do all that you can to help them.

I've spent much more doing just that. She won't accept money as a favour but she will make a sell. I bought over a hundred dollars of glow sticks once just to help her get by. I bought fifty dollars worth of shortbread off of her a year ago.
