Anyhoo, I don't think we NEED it. It's nice to have pride in your country, I guess, but what I often see is this feeling blinding us to logic. Must drive Harley because it's American. Must have American car.

No, and it's been going on since the war of 1812, when we first started to consider ourselves a world power. In essence, we think our ideas, actions, national interests, "national" religion, wealth, trade advantage and political system are far more important than those of any other entity on the planet. Becoming less significant, but still important in the American Caucasian psyche is our predominant whiteness.
