it was formed of mass. there was no "before mass formation" it has always been.

The so-called 'aether' doesn't exist. Long ago it was thought to be present in the universe to provide the means for light to move from place to place, similar to how some substance is needed for sound to move. Michelson-Morley first showed that the aether did not exist, and other experiments since have shown this to be true.
