How many times does this question need to appear? Don't people like you ever read anything besides comic books and blogs?

The US has a lease agreement with Cuba signed sometime in the early part of the 20th century. As long as the US pays it's lease, it is entitled to use the land where Guantanamo is located, much to the disdain of the Cuban government.

In protest to this lease agreement that Cuba would very much like to end, Cuba refuses to cash the checks the US government sends each month.

Git-mo Bay was made a naval base by the Cubans since the Spanish American war in the turn of the century. Cuba has asked the U.S. multiple times to leave but they have ignored those claims. It is U.S. territory and property the only way Cuba can get them off is a military confrontation at this point, which is highly unlikely, because of the superiority of the American Military. Hope this answers your question.

It's a case of might makes right.

Guantanamo is a byproduct of our victory over the Spanish in the Spanish-American war of 1898. As Cuba was a pseudo-colony of the United States following the Spanish American war, we carved out a permanent military base on the island. After the 1959 revolution, Castro was never strong enough to attack the military base we held on the island.

Castro knew there was no good to come out of a military attack on the USA. Also, somehow I doubt we would leave our military base at Gitmo if Castro just politely asked us to.

The Naval base was there before Castro was born. We just refused to give it up on his sayso. The money the servicemen spent in pre-Castro Cuba paid lots of Cubans good money. Then Castro turned against the only ones that helped him, namely the US, and the rest is history. Castro got everything except Gitmo, the Cubans lost everything good, except for a few jobs at Gitmo. I wish John F. Kennedy was alive to see the Berlin wall fall and Castro die. (I met , talked to, and shook JFK's hand. What an impressive and good man he really was. He would have made America even greater than it is now and you kids would ALL be damn proud of your country and of being Americans.)

Yet another person who failed to listen in their high school US History class.

And for you your edification it is occupy, not occupie.

To answer your question the USA signed a 99 year lease for that part of Cuba before Castro and the Communists came to power. The lease also contained a "in perpetuity" clause as long as the US paid the annual lease payment. The USA pays Cuba $4,085 per year on the lease.

At one time, during the Batista period in Cuba, the US and Cuba were friendly nations and the US had bases there. When Castro took over Cuba, the US stayed on Gitmo.

The Naval Base in Cuba was there before Castro took power. Castro simply never had the balls to try and kick the US out.
