the qin dynasty is known as the "first" chinese dynasty and the first that "united" china; before that, there were many small kingdoms who warred and made alliances amongst each other; after there were still other kingdoms, especially in the south, but the qin dynasty did unite a large portion of the country, which, before that, wasn't even really thought of as a "country."
