No hint as to what we are talking about. Vehicle, year, etc. If you have a hydraulic clutch it could be low on fluid or you could have air in the system. There is a separate master cylinder for the hydraulic clutch. It uses brake fluid. If you have mechanical clutch linkage there will be a return spring on the linkage, under thr car, that may be broken. I have never seen a self adjusting clutch.

When your clutch starts slipping, you should feel and know it and then consider replacement of the clutch assembly.
If however it is making noise, it may be the throwout bearing and could be caused by riding the clutch pedal too much.
There should be a clutch return spring located under the dash and could be the cause of it feeling looser, also check for the amount of play within the linkage, they wear with use and could cause some play.
Clutch pads wear with use just as break pads wear when stopping. As they wear, it takes more pedal to release the clutch .
There should be an adjustment linkage under the vehicle that can be adjusted thereby taking up the slack your feeling.

Your clutch is not the pedal you push under the dash. The clutch is what provides power to the transmission via friction. If you put it in gear, give the engine gas and you accelerate the clutch is still good. Your pedal mechanism may be failing however.

Could be that the springs in the pressure plate have lost their strength (specially if at any time the clutch was overused and it overheated) If the clutch is slipping then obviously it needs to be replaced.

not really. most manual transmissions have a automatic adjuster for the clutch. The only time you should worry about your clutch is when you are driving the clutch slips (engine revs faster and you don't go any faster) if that happens get it serviced immediatly.

Well the pressure plate, and clutch disc, and heat don't mix well, the fingers if u have that type will get hot and lose the springing in them,if you can, see if you can push the clutch in underneath, with your hands,if it easy Oh boy,,I mean too easy,,you want to see if the pressure plate has lost or losing its ridgit springing,,
