Actually, giving a newborn baby water CAN be dangerous, it can lower their bodies salt levels and put them into a type of shock, damage the kidneys and, yes, can even lead to death (it's called "water intoxication") . Infants get all the water they need from formula and breast milk. If they are constipated, a pediatrician may sometimes suggest a very small amount of water, but usually they suggest pedialite instead, and neither should be given without the supervision of your doctor. Babies get all the water they need in thier formula or breast milk (if you breastfeed, make sure you are drinking enough water but not too much. drink to thirst so that your milk supply does not get interfered with. in hot weather make sure you are drinking more water than normal so that there is more water in your milk, this will keep the baby hydrated with out you feeling like you need to give him water) untill they start eating solid foods, usually around age 6 months. At this time it is safe to start your child on a small amount of water. Talking to your pediatrician will clear up any more questions you have on the subject.

HEY! My Dr. told me that you can give a little bit of water every day just don't give over .5 ozs. The reason is your baby will not want to eat if it has had to much water.

Wait until 4 months. they dont need it, and believe it or not too much water can poison them. It used to be doctors advice to have baby drink 2 oz. of water a day (this was about 20 - 25 years ago) I know my family members did it with my younger sibligs ...and they made it through! But generally, they dont need it , so dont bother

My first daughter was a summer baby, and it was ridiculously hot and humid (between 37 degrees C and 43 degrees C). She was wanting to feed every 45 minutes (start to start), and my breasts didn't get the time they needed in between to refill. I ended up extending the feeds to one and a half hours (start to start), and giving her a little bit of water in between. This gave me time to refill, and the water was enough for her. I really believe that she was thirsty and not hungry.

I think that in situtations like extreme heat it's okay to give a little bit of water, but if it's just to fill them up there's no need, as breast milk will suffice.

Breastfeeding/Formula will be enough until you start solids. I started solids at the age of 6 months. At that time I gave him a sippy cup with water. Now at 8 1/2 months old he uses the sippy cup extremely well.

My daughter was on a solutab medication at 5 weeks and we had to give it with water. Because of this (I think) she loves water. she drinks it out of a sippy all the time....great way for her to practice with a cup, because it does not matter if she gets all wet. she is now nine months and I water down all her juice 50/50. She still loves it.

Since newborn, a little bit at a time, is fine!! I did with my little girl who is know 2 years old and she learns to love the water, she rather drink water than any juice you offer her!! Water is so good for you !!! A doctor told me once that a full glass of water equals 2 more droops of blood in your body!! Don't know if is true, but I know it's good for your skin, good for your metabolism!! So gotta drink water!!!

I started when she was about 6 months, little sips between feedings. Also started to give her a little just for something to suck on whenever she woke up at night but was not scheduled for a feeding. Helped her break the habit of waking because she figured it wasn't worth getting up for water...

I gave my babies water when they were new born. I did schedule feeding, (I know not a popular concept) If they needed to suck between feedings water was good.
