in simple terms a hernia is a peice of muscle that has protuded outside of the body normally through a hole in either the groin(pelvis) or stomach(hiatus hernia)
hernias normally occur through over exertion, for example when you pick up a large weight the wrong way,and the muscle will pop-out the offending area
patients can live a normal life with a hernia, however if the hernia "strangles",you must go to your local a+e straight away,as a strangled hernia is where the hernia has twisted and if left untreated it can be fatal within hours
treatment for hernias comes in the shape of a operation called a "hernia repair",this is a quick and pretty routine operation carried out on "day surgery" basis by a general surgeon.
the operation involves pushing the offending muscle back into its hole, sometimes using extreme force and covering it with medical guaze, this operation is most of the time 100% succesfull, but patients must be warned to not do any physical work for at least 14 days to 1 month after the operation to avoid the repair wripping
after the operation a course of anti-biotics are prescribed to stop any infection, and painkillers such as dihydrocodeine and ibuprofen for pain releif
i had a hernia repair on a ingurnial(i think i spelt that right!)hernia 4 years ago and its never caused me any problems since
i hope this has answered your question
good luck

A hernia (rupture) is usually noticed as a lump, commonly in the groin or the umbilical region.
It appears when a portion of the tissue
which lines the abdominal cavity (peritoneum)
breaks through a weakened area of the
abdominal wall.

This can give rise to discomfort as the
hernia enlarges and can sometimes be
dangerous if a piece of intestine
becomes trapped ('strangulated') inside.

There is almost no limit to how BIG a
hernia could get if left untreated!

It depends where the hernia is, if your referring to a hernia in the stomach then it is where the stomach wall has weakened and torn and a section of intestine spills out causing a bulge IE, a hernia. It is easy to repair and is often repaired using Key Hole surgery depending on the nature of the hernia of course.
Most hernias are not serious and lots of people live with them quite contently it depends where it is and how much pain you are in.

A hernia is an establishing or weak point interior the muscular shape of the wall of the tummy. This illness reasons a bulging of the abdomen wall. This bulging is many times extra considerable while the abdomen muscular tissues are tightened, thereby increasing the stress interior the tummy. Examples of activities which could worsen a hernia are lifting, coughing, or maybe straining to have a bowel flow. think of a barrel with a hollow in its area and a balloon that's blown up contained in the barrel. area of the inflated balloon might bulge out via the hollow. The balloon dealing with the hollow is somewhat like the tissues of the tummy bulging via a hernia.

so far as i'm aware, it's a protruding piece of intenstine.

this can occur when the abdominal muscles are torn for some reason and the intenstine that usually sits behind becomes visible beneath the skin.

there are also 'hiatus' hernias which occur when "part of the stomach slides through the diaphragm, the muscular sheet that separates the lungs and chest from the abdomen"

i have absolutely no medical training though, so there might be more to it than that.

A hernia is the abnormal protrusion of the intestine through the abdominal wall. They can be in the groin, scrotum, and umbilicus. Hernias can also develop at surgical incision sites.

a hernia is the result of a tear in the muscuklar linining of the abdominal cavity where a loop of bowel has popped through it.
Just watch if it becomes painful this is when the bowel has twisted (strangulation) this is a medical emergency and you should go to a&e

It's a weakness or a tear in the abdominal muscles. Men are more likely to get them because the abdominals have a little hole in them to let the testicles out and that can become the place where the intestine decides to poke out. It's fixable.
