It depends on the type of orchid and size of pot. More common orchids (Phalenopsis, Dendrobium, Cymbidium, Oncidium) in a 6" pot start around $30. More rare ones (Paphiopedlum, some Cattelyas) can be a little more expensive- $30-$50 a plant. Check out Home Depot and Loews plant departments, they have nice orchids at decent prices. More exotic/showier orchids can be found on orchids.com.

Depending on the type of orchid, some are really expensive and others are common and considered cheap. I won an orchid from Smith & Hawken and it was "valued" at $39.99 and is really unusual! But $40 is pretty pricey for one that was wilting. My first orchid was $14.99 but I have seen them at Trader Joes for as little as $12 and greenhouses sell theirs for as much as $200 & up for full blooming pots. Greenhouses (not retailers) sell healthy ones for under $20 usually.

Orchids are like everything else.....the more rare the higher the price. tThey have come down considerably since everyone has discovered has easy they are to grow. You can get a really nice one for anywhere between $20 on up.
