If I change the oil filter in my Jeep Cherokee, will oil spill out all over the place? I don't mind a little bit, I know that will happen. I changed my oil a couple of weeks ago and I didn't have the filter then, but now I do. Just wanted to make sure ahead of time.

If you don't want oil to spill when you take off the filter put a hole in the bottom of it before you remove it. Just make sure you put a drain pan under it before punching the hole. After the oil has drained, unscrew the old filter and put the new one on. Remember to put a small amount of oil on the new the gasket of the filter before putting it on and make sure the filter mount on the engine is clean.

It's a little late now. You pumped half a quart of dirty old oil into system by not changing the filter with the oil.
Just put the drain pan under the filter when you unscrew it, and make sure you get the opening on the filter pointed up as soon as you get it off. Use gloves so you don't get burned, cuss a lot and drop the filter.

If you tip a cup over, does it spill? Oil will not run out of the engine so all depends on whether not you can prevent oil from spilling out of the filter.

Never change the oil without changing the oil filter unless absolutely necessary! You negate most of the benefits of changing the oil.

You need to change the filter WHEN you change the oil. Just save the filter until the next time you change the oil, and change it then. It will make a mess, so be ready for it.

You will have quite a bit of oil spilling out. If you must do it while there is oil in the engine, at least do it after the Jeep has sat overnight so that most of the oil will be in the crankcase.

you should have a container underneath just in case, but most oil filters are screw on so u should only get the oil that is in it to come out not the rest bcoz the rest will be sitting in the bottom of ur motor ok
