FINALLY!
Someone who agrees with me. I seriously cannot tolerate a show that would make William Hung a household name, or allow those horrible wannabes air time to inflict harm on my ears.

I agree with you--it's very sad to watch people humiliated on national television and call it entertainment, so I never watch the audition shows. And I rarely like the comments from the judges, so I don't watch those, and a lot of the songs don't suit the performers, so basically if I'm flipping channels and hear someone giving a great performance I watch for a couple of minutes and then move on.

You're right, it is, but consider this: probably 9 out of 10 people who go to the trouble of forming a band, practicing their hearts out and recording a demo tape in the hope of making it big as a rock star (or whatever) are, let's face it, BAD. Of the fretful 10% that actually have some skill or talent, not very many of them get discovered and become big stars, simply because people like Simon Cowell have to actually meet them and hear how wonderful they are. This is a show where everyday people with hopes of becoming stars actually get the chance to get in front of a panel of music industry experts without having to send in a demo tape or some sort of resume, and prove themselves worthy, and regardless of how good or bad they are, the experts HAVE to hear them -- they can't just throw the demo tape away and say, "Sorry, we've already got enough big stars in our stable right now." It's a "home town boy/girl makes it big" kind of story, the sort that a lot of people like to see, because it gives them the feeling that ordinary people really can succeed in life. The viewers are vicariously living the life and growth of a superstar by watching the show, because they know that 99.9% of them don't even have the huevos to audition.
I don't watch it because I have better things to do, but I also know there's worse on TV these days.

Initially I thought it was a great way of discovering new talent. I also think too much weight is put on it as a talent show. It has turned into a popularity contest and very often the real talent is eliminated earlier on. I mean Rubin Stoddard? Talented yes...the best that year...no way. And the year of Fantasia.... the 3 final contestants should have been the 3 black females...by far the most talent ever seen on any one season.

I watched a few episodes of the first American Idol, but it got boring really fast. I think the original appeal has something to do with the dream of being instantly given fame, though.

The only part of American Idol is the first couple shows. I love to watch these people "sing" and then wonder why they can't move forward to Hollywood. It's amusing. Once the tryouts are over I don't watch it.

It's just a huge popularity contest. Think about it. The three judges only count when selecting the final group of contestants and then it's up to phone in votes to win. Just like the Grammies---just about popularity and not quality. I love the fact that runner-ups are doing better than the winners.

I don't know!! In the beginning it seems like it is making fun of people and i think that is mean. I also think people are stupid for going on the show if they can't sing. I don't like how Simon is so mean to people or how he really hates it if people sing Christian songs.

me too. it's not like they're changing anything too; it's just wannabes with a few talented people singing and then eventually someone gets chosen. at least with other reality shows like Project Runway or The Apprentice the producers change the format/challenges so it's more interesting. i hope it gets cancelled ASAP!

Its Schaudenfreude (Sha-den-froi-da).
Basically, its taking pleasure in others misfortune. I watch the audition shows to hear all of the people that think they're actually good at singing. Then they sound like crap and try to deny it. They're such sad, pathetic, shells that its funny to watch their dreams die in front of them.
