I went to mbta.com and they have a day pass for $9 which seems like the most obvious choice for me. It says that you can ride the local buses, subways, local harbor ferry unlimited and also the Commuter Rail Zone 1A.
My question is- what is zone 1A? Is it that whole map that they show you on the website?? Or just a portion?

Zone 1A will allow you to take the commuter trains between the downtown stations (North, South and Back Bay) to Chelsea, Malden, West Medford, Cambridge-Porter, Ruggles, Forest Hills, Morton, and J.F.K.-Umass stations for sure. Quincy, Braintree and Readville may be included but I am not sure

No there are 8 zones... so the outermost commuter rail stops like Gloucester or Worcester, Providence, etc. are all Zone 8 which is much more expensive. I think Zone 1A is just a couple of the most inner stops but I'm not sure which ones specifically. I think if you're looking at the commuter rail map, and you click on the specific commuter rail station you want, it will give you more info including which zone it's in. (Although they recently re-did the MBTA website, I think it's still the same). You'd think they would make it easier, especially for tourists...

The commuter rail is split into different zones. The maps will show you. So basically it means with that unlimited pass, they will not let you ride very far out of the city for basically free. The longer rides cost more money.

Definitely do the LINKPASS for either a day or a week depending on how long you'll be here. Realizing that the one day is $9 and a week is $15...if you're here for more than a day definitely get the 1 week pass or you're ripping yourself off.

The LINKPASS will get you on every bus and subway you're going to use while wandering around Boston. Plus if you're anywhere in the downtown region you can walk just about anywhere you want. Boston is one of America's Best Walking Cities and the subway and buslines will get you wherever else you need to go.

Just get the day/week LINKPASS and you'll be set. Don't worry about the zones.
