At most places, that means a tux is preferred, but a very dark (e.g. black or charcoal) suit with no pinstriping is likely ok. Wear with a nice white dress shirt and a necktie.
However, unless the man is very self-assured and wants to make a splash, go with the tux. Rentals are fine, and the classic black tuxedo is always best--if a man wants to show his style, he chooses stylish accessories.

At least a tuxedo. Tuxedo is semi-formal, Tails are appropriate for evening formal wear. Generally however, most people choose to wear a tuxedo for black tie, or even some formal events. White Tie is the highest degree of evening formal wear, but it is usually only appropriate for theatre or concerts, or state events.

Because "Men Allowed to Wear Checkered Polyester Seersucker Suits" isn't as snappy of a title. Catchy, maybe, but people are way too lazy to say that and it would be acrimoniously acronomized to MATWCPSS, which also sucks. But thanks for the idea, we actually considered this before we settled on "Men in Black."
