He is a pretty good friend down on his luck (his own fault--no argument from me there)...he has an 8-year old son (sole custody), lost his job and got his license suspended. I feel really bad and want to help him, but how far do I go? And oh yeah, he's hot.

Don't be a fool, if he is down on his luck due to his own fault, then he needs to get up off his butt and make things better.
Sounds to me like he is an irresponsible person if he not only lost his job but his license has been suspended, he's not thinking about his 8yr old son. If you start to help him, it will never stop. Who cares if he is hot, he's still stupid!! Getting yourself involved in his problems would be the worst thing that you could do.

The best help you can give him is to help him see he must help himself! Enabling someone really is an injustice. Sounds like if he didn't have anyone to help him he might not have allowed himself and his son to be in this situation! Not being rude, just speaking the truth.

Ask yourself this question?? Would he be there for you??? He now suffers from his own decisions. Bet he still drives though, huh?? once again. Looks aren't everything. Use that instinct, we all have it, if the 1st one says "Don't" then listen to it or be prepared to be a floor-mat
