We want to raise our children in a good environment. They currently attend private school in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I'm being offered a position with my company in Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas. We found some excellant private schools out there and was wondering if anyone has any thoughts about what would be a better city to live in and raise a family. Thanks!

We moved from Southern California near Los Angeles about 18 months ago. We checked out a lot of different states before we decided to move to the Dallas/Ft Worth area. We couldn't be happier here after spending over 50 years in the L.A. area. We feel that the advantages are:
1. No state income tax
2. Much less pollution then S. Calif
3. Fairly mild climate, just a bit warmer in the summer and a bit colder in the winter but no severe extremes.
4. The school system where we are is light years beyond the one we had in California.
5. We are centrally located in the country and within 20 miles of DFW a major airport.
6. There are all sorts of cultural opportunities, theater, concerts, museums, malls.
7. Gasoline runs about 50 cents per gallon less than California
8. You can buy a brand new all brick 1800 sqft 4 bedroom 2 bath home in a nice suburb for about $140,000.
9. Plenty of recreational opportunities, there are many lakes and streams and areas for hiking, biking and boating.
10. There are lots of young families
11. The crime rate is significantly lower than average in many of the suburbs of Dallas.
12. Our utilities, insurance, car licenses and registrations are all less than California.
13. The people are very polite and neighborly.
14. The roads are not as congested although they are getting more so. There are all sorts of plans to widen the Interstates though.
15. The roads are well maintained with little to no grafitti which was rampant in S. Cal.
16. Teenagers for the most part are very polite and you do not see gang bangers.
17. Kids are very involved in sports and in their church youth groups.
18. In our area of Denton County the school district has a 120 million dollar tech center for the high school students. It is one of only 3 in the country and offers the most unbelievable array of programs so that when a student graduates high school they can go right out and get a good job. They can still go to colege too but it gives them a leg up having a trade or certificate in CAD engineering, pre med, pre nursing, electronics, computer science, cosmetology, hospitality management and many more.

I am a real estate broker licensed in both Texas and California and have raised 4 children.

If you need any more additional information I would be happy to assist you.

Texas ... just sounds bad ... actually the Dallas / Fort Worth area was the worse area I drove through ... the only place I really locked my car doors and didn't make eye contact ... lol ... I'd much rather call myself a New Mexican then a Texan ... private school or not ... bigger the city - bigger the problems - I think Albuquerque is nice ... just enough of everything (except the beach ) ... good luck with whatever you choose ... this is just my opinion ... I've never like Texas - but hey I'm a Cali girl what can I say ... !!

I retired from the Los Angeles Fire Dept. 2 years ago.
My wife and went to the internet and researched for 6 months for a good place to live. We found it and moved one year ago.

Boise Idaho. Everyone here agrees it is kind of an undiscovered paradise. But californians are moving here in droves. Because:
1. Nice new house about 200,000
2. One of lowest state taxes in country.
3. Very very low crime.
4. Everyone is helpful. I opened my hood to check my water and in 10 min. 3 people stopped to ask if they could help.
5 Weather 280 days a year of sunshine.
Temps are suprisingly moderate. This valley is surrounded by mountains which seem to make for mild winters and summers....Little snow except in mountains which are only a few miles away.
6. Beautiful...The beauty of the mountains is amazing. Some canyons as deep as the grand canyon.
7. Sports, winter sports are awesome, many ski areas like sun Valley. Lots of golf courses, I saw people golfing in December. Fly fishing, in the beautiful Salmon river. Hunting, wildlife everywhere, i think about 2-300 geese fly over our house daily.
8. Extremely low unemployment, many jobs.
9. This area is turning into a movie capital with major studios moving here because of the constant good weather and beautiful and varied landscapes.
10. The Boise State Broncos are here...America's giant slayer football team.
11. Real Estate still appreciating.
12. 3rd state with largest influx of population.
13 Extremely low cost of living. It seems everything here is much cheaper.
14. Excellent schools.

Everyone here loves it. I am so happy I moved here, I lived in a beautiful place before this, Manhattan Beach, Ca. but this beats all of California.

Good Luck, I hope this helps you and others thinking of where to live.
