FULL METAL JACKET!!! I will add some now! R. Lee Ermey (aka Sgt Hartman) was originally hired to be a consultant for the movie to oversee and tell the actor who was to be Sgt Hartman how to do it but when the casting people saw R. Lee Ermey in action they said that guy is the one to play the part! Now I have a lot of friends who I do call jarheads (LOL) that have been to wars all the way back to Vietnam and they said this is the most realistic portrayal of how it really was as far as movies go and it is there favorite movie. There are a few others out that are pretty damm good like Apocalypse Now and The Deer Hunter.

I've seen many films of the genre and I gotta say my favorite is Patton, because it is the portrait of a very irreverent but clever general that achieved important victories to the US during World War II. George C. Scott's performance is one of the greatest and significant performances of all times. Patton is a real classic and is the best war movie.

Mars Attacks! (let me explain why)
Because it shows what would happen with liberal thinking.
Marshin shoots general,,says, oops, it was a misunderstanding. So the liberals beleive they can't be evil.
marshin anialates congress, says, oops, it was a misunderstanding. So they give them the benifit of the doubt, even though he's proved otherwise, because they refuse to see evil.
marshin kills president, takes over world.

edit.. jarhead is a lame and failed attempt at ripping off full metal jacket (which is the second best war movie)

Sgt. Hartman wasn't an actor. He was a drill sgt, who they asked to be himself.

Shenandoah (1965) starring Jimmy Stewart - Civil War era. It covered the war-objector, brother vr. brother, people drawn into war unwillingly. Love, marriage, murder, loss, gain. Beautifully written and acted. I love the lines that Jimmy has with the suitor to his daughter.

This is my fave: Kelly's Heroes. Doesn't have the action or drama as most WW2 flicks, but it tells a story that only uses the battles, and war, as a background to a hiest behind german lines.
