The first spacecraft to visit Mars was Mariner 4 in 1965. Several others followed including Mars 2, the first spacecraft to land on Mars and the two Viking landers in 1976. Ending a long 20 year wait, Mars Pathfinder landed successfully on Mars on 1997 July 4. In 2004 the Mars Expedition Rovers "Spirit" and "Opportunity" landed on Mars; they are still operating after more than a year on Mars.

NASA has sent many spacecraft to Mars, starting with Mariner (I believe) back in the day. As far as the pressure on Mars crushing people, this is not true. Mars' atmosphere is much thinner than Earth's.

the people will be smushed when they get out because the pressure there is so much greater on mars than earth and it will take a long time for the ship to reach mars

It will be a long time before they send a MANNED space ship to Mars. They have no definite plans for one yet.

They have already sent many unmanned space ships there, and they will send more. One is to be launched this year I think.
