Ok well im 18, and looking to get my first car over the next year

And i have to sayu i am a big BMW fan, my uncle had one, 20 years old and never had a problem, they do seem very reliable....Obveously i would be after one from 1992-1998...so it would be fairlky cheap...such as the 320I

Would you say this is good ? or will insurance be high etc ?

Okay, being an avid BMW fan and an owner of a 97 z3 2.8L, it's rare that I would ever recommend to someone that they look outside BMW for a car. In your case, however, I'm going to say just that. I do this for a few reasons:

1) BMWs are solid reliable cars, sure. However, like any car, to keep it reliable requires maintenance on schedule. That preventative maintenance is expensive. Example: replacing the clutch on my z3 (which has the same engine as a 3 series) was 900 dollars... that's about three times what it was on my old car. On the rare occasions that they do break, they're expensive as hell to troubleshoot and fix.

2) Your insurance will be through the roof. You're going to want full coverage with a reasonable deductable on ANY decent BMW. I'm out of the lowest aged high insurance brackets, and insurance was still $150 a month on my BMW.

3) You're a young driver. It's not about maturity, it's about experience on the road. With practice you'll react to situations more naturally. Why take the risk on a BMW when you're still statistically most likely to lose it?

4) You're not affording it. You're looking at the cheapest BMW you can get, so I'm guessing that money is going to be an issue. A BMW should be a solid vehicle investment... wait till you can afford one you want to keep as your baby forever and THEN buy one. I know I'm never letting my BMW go.

5) Rear wheel drive... it's difficult to get used to. I think anyone should start in a front wheel drive and get some practice before making the switch.

Personally I'd recommend you go after something like a decent acura, a 2002 nissan maxima, or Honda Civic. You might also look to see if you could find one of the newer Scion tCs, which come with alot of options and will have low miles when you buy it (not to mention cheaper to repair).

BMW's are good cars, but they're pricey. However, if you like 'em, and can afford one, go for it. You could do far worse. As far as insurance goes, your payments will probably look like the national debt because you're a teenager. Mine are obscene and I'm 54 years old and have a perfect driving record! Of course, my affinity for sports cars is part of the problem! And whatever else BMW's are, I don't think they're considered sports cars, and you're looking for one 10 or 15 years old, so it won't cost nearly as much as a newer one, because the value is so much less. Hope you find the car of your dreams, kid. I remember my first car, a 1948 Chevrolet Fleetline Torpedo-back. It was old (even then), rusty, and the damned thing burned more oil than gas, but it was MINE! That made up for everything else!

No BMW is cheap. Insurance probably wouldn't be high, but still we've had a lot of cars that lasted 20 yrs. Just learn how to take care of it. Every car has some problems down sooner or later.

It is a very expensive car to own. It only makes a good first car if you can afford it.

They are not bad cars, but when they do break it'll cost a fortune.
and the insurance will kill you on them. especially as it's RWD.
